Date Fantasy

1 pkg (8oz) chopped dates

1/2 cup snipped kumquats or dried apricots

1/2 cup blanched slivered almonds

2 pkgs. (3 oz each) cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup sugar, divided

2 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

Grated rind of 1 lemon

2/3 cup butter or margarine

2 eggs

1 tbsp lemon juice

Combine dates, kumquats, and 3 tbsp of almonds. set aside. Combine cream cheese and 2 tbsp sugar. Set aside. Spoon flour into measuring cup and level off. Pour into mixing bowl. Add baking powder, salt,  lemon rind and 1 tbsp sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles course meal. Beat 1 egg and 1 egg yolk with lemon juice. Mix gradually into dry ingredients with fork until all particles are moistened. Press into ball. Roll into 15″ x 9″ rectangle on cloth covered board. Spread the cheese to 1/2 inch edges. Sprinkle with the date mixture. Roll up from the long side, jelly roll fashion. Seal the edges. Shape into a crescent. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Prick top with fork. Bake at  400 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven. Beat egg white until moist peaks form. Brush quickly on crust. Sprinkle with remaining sugar and almonds. Return to oven for 5 minutes until lightly browned. makes 10 servings.
